This is the blog of a Norwegian (Marianne, aka 'M') who moved to Australia in 2007 to be with Roger (aka R) and feels lucky to have escaped a comparatively communistic country with ridiculous weather!

Ahhhh, the old thingy in the thingy trick.

One upon a time, there was a handsome prince who lived in a large land called Yawron. He was a special prince and had the powers to prevent evil from entering the land, as long as he found a bride by the time he was 30. One day, while he was travelling through the dark forest, he came accross a witch! Now, this witch knew that if he got married, then she would never be able to stay in the land, so she cast a spell on him, turning him into a unicorn! "Ha" said the old witch, "I've been waiting for you to come this way! Now lets see you get married" 

But, what the witch didn't know was that the Prince had a guardian with him always, a fairy named Rianne, who saw what she did to the prince, but unfortunately was powerless to reverse the spell, so the fairy just stayed with the prince who was now a unicorn and tried to decide what to do.

The fairy knew that if the prince didn't marry before he turned 30, then his power to prevent evil entering the land would be gone, and that also meant that she would have to leave too, because fairy's just cant exist where there is any evil. She had to think of something!

She went to see the old fairy sage who lived high upon the tallest mountain. He was the oldest fairy in the land, and there was nothing he didnt know. She told him of her problem, and she got her answer. The old sage looked at her through old eyes, leaned on his and time weathered old cane and spoke quite softly the following words:

"For a prince to marry, a willing bride must be found. For a bride to be willing, she must already love the prince, for love sees no ill, and conquers all."

The fairy then knew she had to leave, for the old sage only gave one answer to one problem, and it was up to her to figure out how his answer would help.

She searched high and low for someone willing to love the unicorn but no one would. Who would marry a unicorn? Finally, after she had given up, and went to tell the unicorn the bad news.

She mde herself visible for the first time to the prince who stood as a unicorn, and proceeded to tell him the truth. She explained how she had been trying to help and could find no one who would love and marry a unicorn.

The Unicorn replied "I know what you have been doing, I've known all along"

The fairy looked shocked! "But how could you know? I have never even revealed myself to you"

The unicorn looked her straight in the eyes, and told her "True love maybe blind, but not to itself. I may be a unicorn now, but I was a prince once and I wasn't that blind that I couldn't see someone who has stayed with me forever. I could make you out in the darkest of nights, as the light from the fire flickered on the ground, your shadow was there, always keeping me company, always looking after me. How could I not love someone who has been by my side forever?"

The fairy was shocked and surprised and suddenly realised that she too loved the prince. She had always loved him, that's why she had stayed with him no matter what.

Rianne told of her life long love for him, but cried when she realised that fairys cannot marry princes unless something eqully impossible is made possible.

So once again she visited the fairy sage. She told of her solution and the new problem. He once again provided an answer. He said "Strawberries are the fruit of love. Milk is the source of life. If you can mix the two and create something new, then you can marry.

Well, this puzzled the fairy because  strawbverries and milk and cream had always been mixed together for centuries. It was her favourite dessert! How could she create something new from something old? She thought and thought and thought, She lay awake that night thinking, until she had an answer! She would make them make a brand new colour when mixed!

So, she called all her fairy powderpuff girls together and they stayed up all night working on a new colour, one that would suit a fairies love, until she had done it. She called it 'Pink' Which meant 'anything is possible' in the old fairy language. She then made it so that whenever strawberries were mixed with milk, the new colour would appear.

She then took the good news to the unicorn. "My dear Prince, We can marry! I have made something impossible possible, I have caused something new from somthing old, I have made a new colour!"

The unicorn started to weep, as he was overcome with love for his fairy who had tried so hard to fix things. The fairy kissed him gently on his cheek, and at that moment, he was transformed back to the prince he used to be. He looked down at her smiling face and declared "From this day forward, let strawberries and milk mix and create pink, as a reminder that love can conquer all, and let the name Rianne from this day forward be known as Marianne, because marry Rianne is what I shall do!

The prince and the fairy then got married, and lived happily ever after in a land where no evil ever entered.

And that is why today when strawberries are mixed with milk, they become pink.
